The Sunday Times - Fab Floors

...Wooden floors never go out of fashion, but there’s a modern take on this traditional favourite – engineered timber boards. “People come into the shop and fall in love with solid wood, but 80% of customers end up buying engineered,” says Daniel Bloom, co-founder of the eco-flooring firm Ecora. He explains that the product isn’t any less beautiful than its solid sister, but is better adapted to modern living conveniences such as underfloor heating. “When moisture enters solid timber, the wood expands – then moves again as it dries out. The layers of ply holding the oak together in engineered boards make them more stable.” Ecora’s white-oiled engineered oak planks cost £77 per metre (020 7148 5265, ecora.co.uk).
