About these Terracotta products
Our terracotta products truly are a special thing. They are all hand made by artisan crafts people whose skills and knowledge have been passed down for generations.
Since each piece is handmade, they are all slightly unique and there may be some slight variation in shape, size and colour. This colouring is as a result of a reduction process when the items are high fired under-ground- they aren’t glazed, dyed or painted. The satin finish is then created when the items are polished with a semi-precious stone. Since it is not a varnish, the finish can very and change through use.
As this is a handmade product, no two pieces are the same, you may see some variations in the black colour as occasionally the terracotta colour may marble through. There may also be very subtle variations in shape and size- all of which adds the the piece’s unique character!
These versatile dishes can be used on any direct source of heat such as the hob, BBQ and even open fire. They can also be used in the oven, microwave, and even put in the dishwasher, however they are NOT safe in the freezer.
Instructions for use
Before being cooking in for the first time, cookware must be proofed.
First clean the item with washing-up liquid to remove any residues which may be left from the firing process.
Fill the product 3/4 full with water and then bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 200°C or Gas Mark 6. This usually seals the cookware, although a complete seal is generally achieved after it has been cooked in several times. Boiling milk in the vessel may help if it is still found to be too porous, however this is rarely necessary.
The slight porous nature of the surface serves to enhance the flavour of cooked foods once the cookware has been used several times.
We recommend using wooden utensils rather than metal, just to protect the surface.
The cookware may be used for holding liquids but as it is slightly porous, it is best placed on a saucer, especially in cold climates. In hot climates it is ideal for storing water as the water which seeps out evaporates, keeping the water inside cool.
You can clean the cookware with a sponge and hot soapy water, or pop it in the dishwasher.
Bare in mind the pottery does NOT have a non-stick surface. If food becomes burnt on and is difficult to remove, do NOT use an abrasive pad or cleaner as this may scratch the surface. In most cases it is best to leave stubborn deposits.
After cleaning always leave to thoroughly dry before storing away as the pottery is naturally porous, you may need to air the product is stored in a confined space, to avoid mould. It may be useful to pop it in the oven for 10 minutes just to ensure it’s dry.
